EPS 15 kg/m³ is the lightest and lowest-cost grade of expanded polystyrene (thermocol) that we make at our factory in Lahore. It is used for ceilings, covered walls, packaging and other light-duty insulation. It is not a roof grade: for a house roof we recommend 2 inch at 20 kg/m³ or higher. This page gives the sizes, prices, thermal data and estimated electricity savings of this grade, calculated at Rs 45 and Rs 60 per unit.

Thermal resistance (R-value) is the thickness of the foam divided by its thermal conductivity. The table uses λ = 0.039 W/m·K, the middle of the typical range for 15 kg/m³ EPS. The last column compares conductive heat flow with a bare slab that has a resistance of 0.40 m²·K/W (U = 2.5 W/m²·K), which is the baseline used in this page's savings estimates.
| Thickness | R-value (m²·K/W) | R-value (imperial) | U-value of the foam layer alone (W/m²·K) | Reduction in conductive heat flow vs bare slab |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0.5 inch | 0.33 | about R-1.8 | 3.07 | about 45% |
| 1 inch | 0.65 | about R-3.7 | 1.54 | about 62% |
| 2 inch | 1.30 | about R-7.4 | 0.77 | about 77% |
| 3 inch | 1.95 | about R-11.1 | 0.51 | about 83% |
| 4 inch | 2.61 | about R-14.8 | 0.38 | about 87% |
The first inches do most of the work. Going from 1 inch to 2 inch removes about 15 further percentage points of heat flow, and going from 3 inch to 4 inch only about 4 points. These figures cover heat conduction only. They do not include sunlight on the roof, air leaks, or thermal bridges at beams and columns.
One unit of electricity is one kilowatt-hour (kWh). The tables below estimate how many units, and how many rupees, EPS 15 kg/m³ can save each year when it is added to a bare roof, ceiling or wall in an air-conditioned building. Every figure is calculated at two tariffs, Rs 45 per unit and Rs 60 per unit. Your own tariff is printed on your electricity bill and may be different.
Assumptions used in every table
| Input | Value used |
|---|---|
| Foam | EPS 15 kg/m³, λ = 0.039 W/m·K |
| Bare roof or ceiling before insulation | U = 2.5 W/m²·K (resistance 0.40 m²·K/W) |
| Bare external wall before insulation | U = 2.0 W/m²·K (resistance 0.50 m²·K/W) |
| Cooling demand | 9,300 degree-hours per year, which equals about 620 hours at a 15 °C temperature difference, or 465 hours at 20 °C |
| Air conditioner efficiency (COP) | 3.0 |
| Electricity tariffs | Rs 45 and Rs 60 per unit |
The estimates cover heat conducted through the roof or wall only. They do not include sunlight on the roof, air leaks, thermal bridges, or how long your air conditioner actually runs.
Formula
Units saved per year = (U before − U after) × area in m² × 9,300 ÷ 1,000 ÷ 3.0
where U after = 1 ÷ (bare resistance + foam thickness ÷ 0.039). Money saved per year = units saved × tariff. For quick checks, every 100 units saved is worth Rs 4,500 at Rs 45 and Rs 6,000 at Rs 60.
Roof or ceiling, per 1,000 sq ft (92.9 m²)
| EPS 15 kg/m³ thickness | Units saved per year | Saving per year at Rs 45 | Saving per year at Rs 60 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0.5 inch | 323 | Rs 14,535 | Rs 19,380 |
| 1 inch | 446 | Rs 20,070 | Rs 26,760 |
| 2 inch | 551 | Rs 24,795 | Rs 33,060 |
| 3 inch | 598 | Rs 26,910 | Rs 35,880 |
| 4 inch | 624 | Rs 28,080 | Rs 37,440 |
External wall, per 1,000 sq ft (92.9 m²)
| EPS 15 kg/m³ thickness | Units saved per year | Saving per year at Rs 45 | Saving per year at Rs 60 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0.5 inch | 227 | Rs 10,215 | Rs 13,620 |
| 1 inch | 326 | Rs 14,670 | Rs 19,560 |
| 2 inch | 416 | Rs 18,720 | Rs 24,960 |
| 3 inch | 459 | Rs 20,655 | Rs 27,540 |
| 4 inch | 483 | Rs 21,735 | Rs 28,980 |
Worked example: a house with a 2,000 sq ft roof and 1,500 sq ft of external walls
| EPS 15 kg/m³ thickness | Units saved per year | Saving per year at Rs 45 | Saving per year at Rs 60 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 inch | 1,381 | Rs 62,145 | Rs 82,860 |
| 2 inch | 1,726 | Rs 77,670 | Rs 103,560 |
| 3 inch | 1,883 | Rs 84,735 | Rs 112,980 |
| 4 inch | 1,973 | Rs 88,785 | Rs 118,380 |
The saving does not grow in proportion to the thickness. In this example 1 inch gives about 73% of the saving of 3 inch, with one third of the foam. For the cost side, the 3,500 sq ft of this house needs about 110 sheets of 8 × 4 ft, 1 inch, 15 kg/m³ EPS, which cost roughly Rs 52,800 to 60,500 for the sheets alone. Fixing, plaster or screed, and delivery are extra.
Simple payback
Payback in years = total insulation and installation cost ÷ annual electricity saving. To work out yours, add the sheet cost, the installation and finishing cost, and divide by the annual saving from the tables at your own tariff.
How to estimate your own saving
Measure the roof, ceiling or wall area in sq ft, and divide by 1,000.
Pick your foam thickness and read the units saved per 1,000 sq ft from the table.
Multiply by the number from step 1.
Multiply the units by your tariff to get rupees per year.
Please note. These are preliminary illustrative estimates, not measured results and not a guarantee of savings. Actual savings depend on the building, the roof exposure, the quality of installation, weather, how the air conditioner is used, and the tariff on your bill.
| Application | Recommended density | Is 15 kg/m³ suitable? |
|---|---|---|
| Packaging and boxes for light goods | 10 to 20 kg/m³ | Yes |
| Ceilings and non-load-bearing covered areas | 15 to 25 kg/m³ | Yes |
| Wall insulation | 16 to 25 kg/m³ | Only for light, covered walls. It sits just below the usual range, so choose 16 to 25 where the wall will take knocks or heavy plaster |
| Roof heat proofing | 20 to 30 kg/m³ (30 to 40 for walkable roofs) | No. Use 2 inch at 20 kg/m³ or higher |
| Cold storage and cold rooms | 30 to 40 kg/m³ | No |
| Poultry sheds | 30 to 40 kg/m³ | No |
A lower density means less material in the same volume. That is why 15 kg/m³ sheets are lighter and cheaper, and also why they are weaker and slightly less insulating than denser sheets of the same thickness. Tell us your application and we will recommend the right grade.

Ceilings, light covered walls, packaging and other light-duty insulation. It is the lightest and lowest-cost grade we make.
It helps a little, but it is too light and thin for a roof. For a house roof use 2 inch at 20 kg/m³ or higher, and 30 to 40 kg/m³ where people walk on the roof.
About R-3.7 (0.65 m²·K/W), based on a typical thermal conductivity of about 0.039 W/m·K.
For a house with a 2,000 sq ft roof and 1,500 sq ft of external walls, we estimate about 1,381 units a year with 1 inch, which is about Rs 62,145 at Rs 45 per unit and Rs 82,860 at Rs 60 per unit. With 3 inch it is about 1,883 units, or Rs 84,735 and Rs 112,980. These are illustrative estimates, not guaranteed savings.
Take the units saved from the tables on this page, then multiply by the rate per unit on your electricity bill. Every 100 units saved is worth Rs 4,500 at Rs 45 and Rs 6,000 at Rs 60.
Divide the area in sq ft by the sheet area (16 for 4 × 4 ft, 32 for 8 × 4 ft), round up, and add 5 to 10% for cutting.
No. EPS is combustible, so keep it away from open flame and always cover it with plaster, cladding or screed. A fire-retardant grade is available on request.
Yes, we cut custom sizes, and there is no minimum order.
Values marked typical are for the 15 kg/m³ density class and are not a guarantee for every batch.
Savings figures are preliminary illustrative estimates for heat conducted through the roof or wall. They are not measured results.
Actual savings depend on the building design, roof exposure, installation quality, weather, how the air conditioner is used, and your electricity tariff.
Rs 45 and Rs 60 per unit are assumed tariffs. Please use the rate on your own bill.
Prices are indicative factory rates before delivery and can change. Please confirm today's rate before ordering.
